Ableton Live 12.2: Auto Filter Just Got a Major Upgrade – Here’s What’s New
Introduction
Ableton just shook things up with Live 12.2, revamping the Auto Filter – one of the most-used effects in the DAW. Some users might be asking: Did they improve it or ruin it? Let’s break it down.
What’s New in Auto Filter?
- DJ Mode – Morphs between a low-pass and high-pass filter dynamically
- New Filter Types – Comb, Resample, Notch+LP, Vowel for extra sound design options
- Stereo LFO Visuals – You can now see the LFO in action
- Drive on All Filters – More warmth and saturation across every mode
- Better UI – Key dials like Cutoff & Resonance now front and centre
Breaking Down the New Features
1️⃣ DJ Mode – The Star of the Show
This new mode dynamically morphs between low-pass and high-pass, making it ideal for live DJing and smooth transitions. Think Pioneer-style DJ filters baked into Ableton.
2️⃣ Resample & Comb – Crazy Sound Design Potential
- Resample gives a bit-crushed, Daft Punk-style effect, similar to Redux.
- Comb adds a flanger/phaser vibe, great for weird textures.
3️⃣ Stereo LFO with Visual Feedback
Now, the LFO display shows real-time movement, making it easier to dial in precise modulation. The blue/yellow lines represent the left & right phase offsets, making stereo modulation way clearer.
4️⃣ Drive on Every Filter Type
Previously, Drive was limited to certain filters – now, it’s everywhere. Crank it up for extra warmth, grit, or distortion.
Is It Better Than Before?
For the most part, yes. The core low-pass, high-pass, and band-pass filters remain untouched, but the extra features make Auto Filter more flexible.
If you use DJ-style filtering, sound design tricks, or LFO-driven automation, this is a solid upgrade.
